karina walker - Llanrhaeadr

Looking at your site takes me back over 30 years! Living in Llanrhaeadr all of us youngsters went down to support the Llanrhaeadr players when they were playing at home. We helped with the drinks at half time and I can remember going round with a bucket collecting donations from the visiting team, that was hard work!
I am glad to see that the Summer League is still going strong and that Llanrhaeadr are still doing well.
I am after some info from yourselves. I found a trophy in my late uncle, Keith Edwards, possessions. It relates to the Runners Up in the 1939 Football League. I wondered if it was Llanrhaeadr that had won it that year?
My Taid, Myfyr Edwards played in the Summer League as pictured in your 1937 picture in the Llanrhaeadr pictures on your website.
I wondered if this trophy was something that my Taid had won or if it was one he had acquired?
Reply - Myfyr Edwards played for the Llanrhaeadr team who were champions in 1937 and Runners up in 1938 and 1939. Thanks for the photos.

Myfyr Edwards is the 2nd man from the right - second row

Eryl Williams - Tremeirchion
25th June, 2010
Read on the website about the death of Norman Williams and that he was the remaining member of the 1947 shield winning team. I believe Tremeirchion won the shield sometime in the 40's and my father was a member of that team, though he died in 1987. However there are at least 2 survivors of that team, both farmers as was my Dad. They are Eifion Morris of Mynydd Bychan Tremeirchion and Ivor Hughes of Bryn Farm Tremeirchion. Just wondered, are there any archive pictures of the Tremeirchion team of that era? On the longevity subject, I am sure there are still a few pre-war shield/league winners around the vale - be interesting to find the oldest.

Thanks for getting back to me - I bow to your superior knowledge! It is possible my father played in that pre -war team - he was born in 1923. His close friend Ivor Hughes would not have as he was a bit younger and Eifion was a lot younger. All 3 would definately have played in the 1953 side though Eifion would have only been about 17 at the time. Im sure my mother does have a photo from this era. You are right about Eifion's talent. All though he never played winter league, news of his ability reached Blackburn Rovers who had a very good scouting operation at the time in North Wales (Roy Vernon, Mike England, Newton Hughes) and they had him watched on several occasions. Another member of that side was a chap who ran the post office in tremeirchion for decades and was simply known as 'glyn the post' - I think his surname was Royles but Im not sure. I only ever saw Tremeirchion play once and that was in 1967 when I was 13. I persuaded my father that he wanted to go and see his mate Ivor that night because my best mates elder brother was playing for Caerwys against Tremeirchion - it must have been one of Caerwys' first games in summer league because it was in May as it was the same night as Celtic won the European cup. The game had been moved to a Wednesday- something to do with Caerwys borough celebrations. Anyway, Tremeirchion won 3-2 with my mates brother Stuart Roberts scoring both goals -he was only 16 at the time.(there is a picture of him on the Caerwys section of your website from the early70's). A chap called Frank Smith scored all 3 of Tremeirchion's goals. They played on a very slopey pitch opposite the entrance to Brynbella Hall. In my Fathers day they played in a field in the Pistyll area of Rhuallt. That pitch is now buried under the A55! I'll try and dig out that picture and send you a copy.
June 22nd, 2010 - though iv not seen any summer league footy in my life, i keep a close eye on your website for results and news, looks like being a very exciting end to the title race, which is good to see, congratulations to everyone and all the teams involved. and may the the league survive for generations to come.
