NANTGLYN 5 (Adam Eden (5)) CEFN 3 (Keiron Hildritch (2), Dave Evans)

Llangynhafal's rearranged match with Cefn is being played tomorrow (12pm) and there will be Clawddnewydd and Llandyrnog supporters acting as Llangynhafal fans for the day after last night's scores!

 Shaun's Snippets

Never take anything for granted in Summer League!

Basement side Nantglyn caused the biggest stir of the season yet with their 5-3 win over previously unbeaten leaders Cefn.

Adam Eden was in scintillating form, scoring all five of Nantglyn's goals.

Much better fortune for Eden this time around, after he scored SIX in last season's 22-1 win over Trefnant.

These goals were taken off him when Trefnant pulled out of the league.

Eden's haul is the biggest personal tally since Jake Walker scored a magnificent seven for Cefn in a 12-0 victory versus Ysceifiog on June 22, 2011.

The result was only Cefn's sixth defeat in their last 52 league games.

Away day blues?

With just over half the season completed, all 11 teams have picked up at least 1 away win. Llandyrnog were the last team to secure victory away from home with their narrow 1-0 success at Caerwys last night.

Ten of the 11 clubs have won at home, with only Ysceifiog waiting to break their duck.

All of this demonstrates how competitive this season's league is.

Shaun's snippets:

Monday night saw two amazing comebacks.

Llandyrnog trailed Llanrhaeadr 3-1 during the second half and they were also down to 10 men following the sending off of goalkeeper Daniel Jones. But they turned things around to win 4-3, and move up to second.

Nantglyn were 3-0 down after 20 minutes at Rhewl, but goals from Geraint Jones, player manager Gareth Lewis, Adam Eden and Gwion Evans saw them come storming back to win 5-3. It's fair to say that Nantglyn like the Rhewl pitch, as their previous visit yielded a 6-0 win over Llangynhafal!

Goal-den night - last night's five games saw 39 goals scored! I wonder if this is a record for a five-game Summer League night??

Shaun's Snippetts

Pick of the goals:

Rhewl's Endaf Jones scored four in Rhewl's 7-0 victory over Llangynhafal, including a Beckham-esque strike from the halfway line.

Dave Finnie and Jordan MacCarter both smashed home 30-yard strikes for Clawddnewydd against Ysceifiog

Dewi Roberts (Llanfair) turned and shot home from 25 yards, while Cefn's Owain Roberts netted with a shot from the right edge of the area into the top corner.

  Looking ahead:

Something has to give in Monday's top-of-the-table clash between Cefn and Clawddnewydd. Cefn are the only side still unbeaten at home, while Clawdd are one of only two teams who haven't lost away from home. A draw might be the favourite, then!

Ysceifiog, Llanfair and Nantglyn are all still searching for their first home wins of the season.

Llandyrnog are the only team not to win away so far, but they've only played two games away from Cae Nant

Shaun's Snippetts

One of Owain Roberts' goals was a 35-yard screamer for Cefn. Endaf Jones netted with a 20-yard free-kick for Rhewl.

To demonstrate how close the league is, Henllan have gone from second-bottom to fifth in less than a week!

NANTGLYN 0 LLANRHAEADR 2 (Gari Evans, Ian Evans)

YSCEIFIOG 1 (Andy Rooke) CEFN 1 (Floyd Richards)

Shaun's Snippets

There's only two Neil Davies'! Neil "Dafis" Davies scored the first goal for Llanfair at Caerwys, while Neil "Twin" Davies grabbed the late equaliser

A case for the defence: Leaders Cefn dropped their first points of the season on the back of a 1-1 draw at Ysceifiog. Steve Hicklin's side were lucky not to lose and they might have done without fine performances from centre back Neil Cross and left back Llion Edwards

Toms attack: It was tricky enough to keep up with the Toms when Llangynhafal had Tom Sharples, Tom Dyer, Tom Seddon and Tom Edmunds all starting last night. Then, in the second half, Tom Sheridan came on as a Henllan substitute!

Congratulations to Ruthin Town FC, who will play at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground next Tuesday, May 15 in the final of the NEWFA Challenge Cup.

Summer League players Josh Davies (Llandyrnog) and Jack Crompton (Llangynhafal) scored for Ruthin in their 2-2 draw with Hawarden Rangers in last night's semi-final.

Ruthin won the penalty shootout 3-2 and they will now play Cefn Druids in the final.

Llangynhafal manager Martin Dyer was in goal the last time Ruthin appeared at The Racecourse.

That was back in 1992, when Ruthin beat Rhos Aelwyd 3-2 after extra time to win the Dave Bennett Cup.

 Shaun's snippets

The main feature of last night was the amount of comebacks!

Caerwys trailed Llanrhaeadr 3-2 with 7 minutes left, but goals from Kallum Davies and Johnny Griffith saw them win 4-3

Rhewl were 2-0 down with 8 minutes to go at Henllan. Endaf Jones and Anthony Marshall struck to see it end 2-2

Nantglyn were 2-0 up versus Llanfair - and 4-3 ahead with a minute to go - but a Neil Dafis Davies hat-trick salvaged a point for Llanfair

Tom Dyer with a trademark 25-yard free kick for Llangynhafal

Rich Mike Jones scored from distance for Caerwys at Cefn

Normal service resumed! -After pointing out the lack of home wins, 4-out-of-5 of last night's games were won by the home team - and the other was drawn!

It was a terrible night for playing football and even worse for spectating, however two heroines we came across in Nantglyn were Mrs Gwenfyl Lloyd and Mrs Bethan Harrison serving us hot mugs of tea and coffee.

Shaun's snippets

Best goals of the night:

15-year-old Matthew Evans improvised a great back heel for Llanrhaeadr at Henllan. Evans also caught the eye with a 25-yard chip to complete his first ever Summer League hat-trick

The pick of Henllan's goals was a 20-yard drive from Tom Davies to make it 3-3

 NO HOME COMFORTS!

So far this season, home wins are thin on the ground.

Of the 18 games played so far, only 3 have ended in home wins.

There have been 10 away wins and 5 draws

 COINCIDENCE OF THE NIGHT

Tom Carney scored a hat-trick for Ysceifiog in their win at Nantglyn on April 26. Tom's last hat-trick was in 2011, in the game at Llangynhafal... on April 26!

His previous hat-trick came against Henllan in 2010... but that one was on April 29!!

Achievement of the night: Ysceifiog 2 Caerwys 3

This was Caerwys' first away win in the league since May 7, 2009 (when they beat Rhewl 2-0).

They lost their last 8 away games in 2009, all 11 away games in 2010, nine away games last year (the other one was a draw) and they drew at Llandyrnog in their 1st away game this season.

That's a winless run of 30 games!

Top goals:

Endaf Jones (Rhewl): Two 40-yard specials at Llanrhaeadr

Jack Cooledge (Rhewl): Great individual goal saw him beat 2 players before scoring

Tom Dyer (Llangynhafal): 40-yard free kick from the touchline into the top corner

Gwion Owen (Cefn): Messi-esque chip versus Henllan

Comments From Shaun Free Press about the Top goals of the night

Clawdd's Jordan MacCarter at Rhewl, with a fine run from close to the touchline and brilliant shot into the corner from 20-25 yards.

Henllan's Kevin Davies volleyed in from 25 yards to give his side the lead against Nantglyn (it will get further out as the season goes on!)

Endaf Waller side-footed volley for Nantglyn - had to wait an age for Geraint Jones' looping cross to come down.

The most dramatic goal of the night is probably Jake Spencer's, who equalised for Caerwys in the 96th minute at home to Llangynhafal.

Best double-act: Tom Dyer and Garmon Hafal. All of Llangynhafal's goals this season have been created by Tom and they've all been scored by Garmon! (The best double act since Morecambe and Wise!)

Quote of the night: "I feel like Pep Guardiola this morning," Roger Beech (after Llanfair missed a host of chances versus Llanrhaeadr)

Comments from Shaun Davies from the Free Press on his round-up of games

If you want to put a goal of the week section on the website, it sounds like the Neil Davies goal for Llanfair was something special!

Roger Beech compared it to Drogba's goal for Chelsea last Sunday!

Adam Eden and Dewi Llion also scored from way out in the Cefn-Nantglyn match.

It is worth while getting your hands on last week's Free Press with an excellent centre page feature from Shaun Davies - what is interesting is the upbeat quotes from club reprentatives about the oncoming season - not a concession in site!!

Also Wendy Meadows from Ysceifiog has produced another excellent League Handbook  which has been distributed to all the clubs so your local Club Secretary should have one for you.

Trefnant

Trefnant will not be participating in the 2012 Summer League season. The first attempt at a  fixture list included them - all those matches have now been deleted fom the new fixture list

Registration Meetings 2012

The first of the Registration Meeting was held in Rhewl Pavilion on Thursday March 29th the second will be held on Thursday April 5th at  the same locality. These meetings will start at 7:30pm and all clubs must attend.

Ms. Gill Stephen from Menter Iaith - Dinbych attended the first meeting and she will be liaising with the clubs to produce Welsh article on the League in the Free Press and in their quarterly hand out

Welsh version of this website

The League has been working with Nan Edwards of the Bwrdd yr Iaith Gymraeg/Welsh Language Board to produce a bilingual website - this should be ready for the new season.

Nan has dug up some volunters for this work: they are John Kerfoot Jones Pwllglas, Brian Jones Llangynhafal , Bryn Jones Groes,  Ann Jones Evans Llandyrnog a Nerys Owen Rhewl; most of the above have connections with our League.

League Officials following the 2011 AGM

Chairman

The new League Chairman is Alan Bridson from Nannerch - he played Summer League football for Ysceifiog and once he stopped playing he was press ganged to become a member of the Executive Committee in 1990;  he was elected as General secretary in 1996 a post he relinquished in 2006.  He is a fully committed Summer League man and the League are fortunate to have him as Chairman.

General Secretary

Mike Denman resigned as General Secretary of the League just before the Annual General Meeting, he also resigned from the Executive Committee.

Alan Bridson  is undertaking the work of the General Secretary up to and including the Registration meetings; Tudor Jones has volunteered to be minutes Secretary for the rest of the Season.

Deputy Chairman

Dennis Williams was elected to this position at the 2011 AGM. Dennis has a wealth of experience of Summer League matters as the Cefn Secretary and  a member of the Executive Committee member.

Executive Committee Member

Tudor Jones and Jason Owens, Henllan were elected on to the Committee at the AGM and Llanfair F.C.'s  nomination of Eryl Jones, Graigfechan has been accepted.

The 2011 Annual General Meeting

The League's  Annual General Meeting for 2011 was held at the Rhewl Pavilion at 7:30pm on Wednesday October 5th.

 Main items were :-

The minutes of Executive Committee meetings are published on the web site once they have been approved by the Executive committee.

The proposed resurrection of the senior 7-a-side competition did not go ahead due to insufficient interest on the part of the Clubs.

The invitation from Paul Scothern to send a representative team to France was not pursued.

OFFICERS REPORTS. The Chairman’s report started with his announcement to the meeting that it was his intention at this meeting to retire from his position as Chairman, but to remain on the Executive committee and continue to maintain the Summer League web site.

He congratulated Llandyrnog for their victories in both League and Shield and extended his congratulations to include Cefn and Nantglyn in finishing runners up in the respective competitions.

The season was soured by having the Behrens Cup stolen from the Hawk and Buckle in Llanefydd, but the Cefn Club have offered to buy a replacement so he thanked the  Club for this gesture.

The North Wales Times Shield was also due to be replaced as there was do room left to engrave future winners and it was becoming care-worn. The  Family of the late Tony Evans have offered to buy a new Shield to be called the Tony Evans Memorial Shield and he extended his thanks, on behalf of the League to them.

He congratulated Llangynhafal and Rhewl for being Winners and Runners-up respectively in the junior 7-a-side competition and Ysceifiog and Henllan for similar feats in the Primary Schools competition.

He thanked Aled Davies and Arfon Griffiths for managing the Rest of the League team against the champions and praised the outstanding talent of the youngsters coming into the league.

He was disappointed that the season started so disastrously, with the demise of Trefnant despite the best efforts of the Executive committee to help them.

He went on to extend his thanks to the Clubs, the referees and the Executive Committee. He also thanked the Denbighshire Free Press for their excellent coverage of the League and for their generous sponsorship.

As part of his farewell speech he paid tribute to some outstanding members of the Executive Committee during the time of his office including  the President, R.Emlyn Jones, Peter Wilson, George Edwards, Paul Scothern and present members Alan Bridson, John O Roberts and Clwyd Roberts.

He was pleased to see the League had now become “hi tech” with the web site enabling ex-pats to keep abreast of League affairs wherever they may live and email saves a lot of time and money and enables a greater and much broader spread of information.

He said there had been many highs and lows during his term of office. The highs included seeing the newer Clubs, Ysceifiog, Llangynhafal, Nantglyn and Clawdd Newydd winning their first major trophies.

He expressed his pride in the longevity of the League and wished it well and hoped it would continue for many more years to come.

The Treasurer presented his balance sheet for the year, which was approved and adopted by the meeting

The Referee’s Secretary gave his first report as Referee’s Secretary. He thanked the Committee for  their support, especially the Chairman and Clwyd Roberts for all their help. He was pleased to report that all fixtures had been covered with an official referee and that he had received good reports of the performance of the new referees that had officiated last season. He was pleased to report an overall improvement in the number of cautions and dismissals, particularly those related to Foul and abusive language.

President’s Address. The President announced his intention to stand down from his post at next year’s AGM. He had been impressed by the performance of the referees over the season, but had not been impressed by the way Trefnant had dropped out of the League. He was grateful to  the Denbighshire Free Press for their excellent coverage. He said the Foot and mouth outbreak of 2000 had been overcome in a manner that ensure some Summer football had been played but that rural depopulation was taking it’s toll and we need to see what can be done to address the imbalance between the larger and the smaller villages.

 ELECTION of OFFICERS

 The President was re-elected unopposed.

The Chairman (Tudor Jones) re-affirmed his decision not to seek re-election and Alan Bridson was unanimously elected in his place. Dennis Williams was proposed and elected unopposed to the position of  Vice Chairman and Treasurer (John O. Roberts) was re-elected unopposed. Eifion Howatson was re-elected, unopposed, to the position of Referee’s Secretary but as yet the position of general Secretary remains vacant.  The remaining positions on the Executive Committee were filled by Noel Jones, Tudor Jones, Clwyd Roberts, David Owen and Jason Owens.

The new Chairman made a plea to increase the membership of the Executive Committee, even people with current Club affiliations should be encouraged to put themselves forward for nomination.

The Executive Committee proposed that League Membership fees be raised from £50-00 to £75-00 this was agreed.

The proposal of an increase in the Referee’s fee from £22-00 to £25-00 was agreed with the proviso that it be capped at this level for three years.

PAYMENT of FINES. All Clubs had paid their fines with the exception of Llangynhafal . Their fine was still outstanding and increasing at a rate of 10% per month, in accordance with Rule 18

APPLICATION for MEMBERSHIP All Clubs, with the exception of Llangynhafal, who completed their  fixtures last season had submitted their Application for Membership Form. As Llangynhafal were represented at the meeting, it was assumed they would be competing next season and their Secretary will be reminded to submit the formal application. The Chairman undertook to speak to Trefnant with a view to seeing if they would be in a position to apply for membership for next season.

CHANGES to the CONSTITUTION and RULES.

    (b) Clawdd Newydd requested that their boundary be extended to include the rest of the hamlets of Bryn SM and Pandy Capel.

          This proposal was carried 26 – 1

Members of the Executive Committee will meet with the Club to draw up and agree the final boundaries

      (c) Llanrhaeadr requested that their boundary be extended to include the address of “Llys”

  Any Other Business

The Executive Committee proposed that with the new format of the Shield competition resulting in the final being played in the middle of July, then the Champions versus The Rest match could be played on the Friday of the Royal Welsh Show week. This was agreed

There being no further Business the meeting closed at 9-30 pm.

  The Behrens Cup

Still bad news the Cup has not been returned and it is highly unlikely that it will never be returned

The good news is that Cefn F.C. have volunteered to purchase a new Championship Trophy for the new Season
